BARAKAH NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
First facility in Abu Dhabi
The first nuclear power plan in United Arab Emirates is still under construction, but it’s already a marvel of global project planning as the country works to meet their electrical demand. Energy demand in the UAE is growing at an annual rate of about 9%, three times the global average.
Located on UAE’s Persian Gulf coastline, four APR-1400 nuclear reactors are planned to start operation successfully between 2017 and 2020. Groundbreaking on the $20 billion project was held in March 2011. With more than 18,000 staff involved in the project, construction is fully underway on all four units.
By 2020, it is projected that nuclear energy will produce nearly a quarter of the nation’s electricity needs.
